Growing up I’ve always had an appreciation for beautiful clothes, fine food and exciting travel. My family worked (and still work) incredibly hard and didn’t have a lot of disposable income but with the little bit that we did have, my parents always made sure that we had special experiences and looked impeccable. Frilly-ankle-socks-and-carrying-a-briefcase-to-primary-school impeccable. (Yes, I was basically Will from the Inbetweeners – thank you mum).
Anyway, over the years I’ve learnt from them how to stretch my money and choose well, scoping out those little-known brands which offer high quality at amazing prices. Now, as a 20-something freelancer living in London, I’ve made it my mission to find beautifully made products and incredible experiences that add a little sparkle to our lives without breaking the bank.
I first fell in love with blogging when I was a student. I loved reading about the styles of other women. How they each put outfits together differently and shared their individual tastes. Over time though with success, of course, came money for these women and so their shopping habits shifted from H&M to Hermes… Suddenly I couldn’t relate so much.
I was still in awe of the beautiful clothes that they wore and inspired by what they had achieved but saddened by how I no longer felt that I could join in. I could no longer ‘shop the looks’, I could no longer ‘steal her style’. Instead of being bitter though, I decided to channel my energy into something positive.
Why couldn’t I recreate a retro, Clueless-style outfit just because my tweed blazer is from Zara and not Chanel? Who could really tell? So what if my new wedding outfit was in fact not the £400 Self Portrait purchase other guests guessed it was? Yay for me! I realised I could step forward to show others that you can’t put a price on style. Thus, Rich Little Poor Girl was born.
