I don’t know about the rest of the world but in London right now we’re feeling hot, Hot, HOT and I’m trying my very best not to complain. Don’t get me wrong, I LIVE for the sunshine. The Vitamin D and the good moods it brings about, the fact that all you need is a grassy patch, a bottle of wine and good company (or a good book) to have a perfect day. However, when the weekend is over and it’s time to traipse back to the office – that’s when all my summer styling woes have me in a spin. ‘What can I wear to my meeting that isn’t going to render me a sweaty mess by 10am but also isn’t just straight up nudity. Hmm…’. Luckily for me, I long ago discovered a garment which has since been my perfect answer to this question – summer duster jackets.
Lightweight and long, these beautiful, airy pieces are perfect for summer layering. They provide coverage from both harsh sun rays and unexpected evening breezes whilst being light enough to keep you feeling free and fresh all day. Whilst you’ll find designer dusters on sites like Farfetch for upwards of £800, our faithful high street favourites have clocked on and created accessible versions for as little as £20. Some of my favourites are here, here, and here and you’ll find more here on the shop page of this blog.
They’re the perfect solution to day-into-night socialising, saving you from deciding between lugging around a jacket on your arm all day or going without and freezing to death at the end of the night. As you can see, summer duster jackets work really well as a casual coverup but they also look equally great draped over a smart shift dress or tailored trouser-and-cami-combo for work.
Summer duster jackets have, in fact, transformed my professional wardrobe. Once up a time, in an environment where bare shoulders are frowned upon but it’s just too hot for a cardigan or blazer, pretty much all of my sleeveless tops instantly became unsuitable for work in the summer. Enter summer duster jackets and suddenly I have an in-between solution that suits everyone. Not only incredibly chic due to its long, flowing lines, the duster jacker or ‘summer trench’ look is conservative enough to keep clients happy as my arms, shoulders and knees are technically ‘covered up’. It even provides protection from over-zealous office air conditioning should I venture away from the comfort of my home office to visit a client in theirs. Fashion Magic.
I hope that this have given you some summer layering ideas. For more summer duster jackets styling inspiration, you can see examples of how I style mine through the week on my Instagram stories here. I have a couple of these dusters in different colours so I’ll make extra sure to wear them this week so catch me if you’re quick! How is the summer weather set to be where you are? Wishing you LOTS of fun in the sun! x
